  3. Sprinkle the yeast on top of the water and set aside until the yeast has begun to turn frothy. This step will take approximately 10 minutes.
  4. Add the vegetable oil to a medium size frying pan and add the onions. Cook the onions over medium heat until they are translucent, and golden brown. Remove the pan from the heat.

  6. Stir in the black pepper, oregano and parsley.
  7. Add the onions, yeast mixture and the remaining ¾ cup of warm water to the flour.

  9. If the dough is dry, add a bit more water.
  10. Form the dough into a ball and knead on a floured work surface for 3-5 minutes.
  11. Add additional flour to the ball of dough, if necessary, to prevent it from sticking to the work surface.
  12. Coat the bottom of a clean bowl with non-stick cooking spray.
  13. Place the dough into the bowl.
  14. Cover the top of the bowl with a clean kitchen towel.
  15. Let the dough rise, in a warm location, such as on top of a refrigerator, until doubled in size. This step can take between 1 and 2 hours.
  16. Return the dough to the floured work surface and knead for 1-2 minutes.
  17. Shape the dough into a 8-10 inch flat circle and place it on a baking sheet which has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
  18. Use a serrated knife to cut diagonal lines across the top of the dough.
  19. Set the pan of dough aside and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  20. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  21. While the oven is preheating, coat the top of the dough with the milk and sprinkle the poppy seeds on top.
  22. Place the pan in the oven and cook for 10 minutes.
  23. Reduce the heat to 400 degrees and bake for 20 more minutes.
  24. Remove the bread from the oven and let cool slightly before slicing.
